REED

MARCEL GAPED AT HIM, CEMENTED IN PLACE.

His Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed. His mouth opened, then closed. Those gorgeous eyes of his searched Reed’s; wide with confusion and shock. When he finally spoke, his words caught in his throat. His fists balled up at his sides, and every muscle in his body tensed as he processed what Reed had told him.

The bear shifter smelled the uncertainty and surprise emanating off Marcel. He wanted to comfort his ex, to reassure him they’d figure everything out together... just like old times.

But the pained expression on Marcel’s face froze him in place.

“What are you saying?” Marcel managed.

The strain in his voice pulled at Reed’s heartstrings.

“I’m saying you’re their biological father,” Reed said.

Speaking those words aloud felt as surreal as the grand resort they’d bumped into each other at.

“I’m... what? But... That’s impossible...” Marcel peeled his eyes from Reed’s and whispered so softly the bear almost didn’t hear it.

“Isn’t it?”

Reed picked up the sound of footsteps behind them and glanced over his shoulder. A group of women holding pool gear stood in front of the elevator, watching the scene unfold before them. He turned his attention back to Marcel and said loud enough for the strangers to hear, “take a paternity test if you need to, but I guarantee you’ll pass it with flying colors.”

His words surprised the women, who immediately shifted gears to find another elevator.

“I’m the baby daddy?”

Reed nodded. “You’ve been their baby daddy the entire time—you just didn’t know it yet.”

“But... But...” Marcel trailed off, at a loss for words.

Seconds passed, and Reed sighed.

“Look, I’m not telling you this to force the boys on you. If you want to be in their lives, this is an open invitation. Otherwise, you can go back to your life without worry. I make plenty enough to take care of them on my own, so I won’t be hitting you up for money.”

Marcel shook his head and averted his eyes. He stared down at his shoes, his eyebrows scrunched inward.

Reed placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder. “Do you want time to think it over?”

His ex bit back a laugh. “Children don’t work like that, Reed.”

The bear shifter sighed. “They’ve already waited five years. Another day or two won’t hurt.”

“Five years?” Marcel gasped.

“Give or take.”

He checked his wristwatch and smothered his face in his hands. “Let’s go back to my room and talk about this in private.”

He reached for Reed’s hand and gripped it as they walked back to his hotel room. The bear’s skin tingled from Marcel’s touch.

Inside, his ex busied himself with the coffeemaker. He brewed a carafe and retrieved two mugs from the room’s kitchenette. The aroma of dark roast wafted through the room.

Marcel poured their cups and placed them on a tiny counter in the living area. Reed sat across from him and stared into the mug, his nerves returning to him once more.

He waited with bated breath as Marcel prepared his coffee with the usual cream and sugar.

“Jacob and Benjamin look a lot like you,” he commented, touching his hair as he said it.
